This is a quick shooting demo testing the Rage 2 Blade Broadhead that I’m making the switch to this fall for my archery hunts. I really wanted to document the consistency of going from regular field points on my Beman ICS arrows…to the practice head that comes included with the Rage broadheads….and finally sacrificing a real broadhead to see if they fly as advertised.

The results speak for themselves. In the past, I always have to adjust to account for some drop. I made exactly zero adjustments from my field points, and can’t wait to put the hurt on a black bear next week. Check out the video. Keep in mind that I’m aiming above the circle. The center of my Block is shot to hell, but I wanted to get this done. The video also shows, once again, the reason why I insist on Lumenok…even when practicing.

Before I get threats and whining from the PETA crowd for trying to take out every cottontail I can, let me clarify that these little terrorists have been perpetually destroying almost every new tree I plant. In one case they took out over 300 newly planted white pines in one winter. Needless to say, I don’t feel bad. YTD I’ve put about 10 down.

In this case, you can see the close miss. Watch the whole video and you’ll see the cottontail actually react to the release of the shot. It probably would have been about two inches high anyways, but this rabbits reactions were quick enough to let him get away. I did find a tuft of hair, but still a miss! Check it out, the slow motion footage is pretty cool!!! Once again, big thanks to Lumenok, it looks like a lazer streaking through to the target and really multiplies the value of video.

It’s official! The upper mid-west is going through another tough winter with heavy snow cover, unrelenting periods of cold, wind, ice, and just general nastiness. A quick example is my recent family visit where I traveled to the southwestern corner of ND (where this video was shot). They had a weird frost, high humidity, with cold temps followed by snow…bottom line, a significant slice of the state had miles and miles of power lines and poles snapped under the weight of the ice. My brother finally got power back… NINE AND A HALF DAYS LATER!!! I’ll reiterate, people were without power for well over a week. FEMA wasn’t called, I didn’t read about a “state of emergency”, there weren’t troops helping save the “victims”…they helped themselves (kinda weird!).

Anyways, it was great to see the birds hangin’ tough. I can say the pheasant population was concentrated to farm yards and places with very heavy cover. Many of the “usual” spots were lifeless. These are tough, rugged birds, but they need a break. It was almost shocking to see the large numbers of roosters, particularly mature, older birds. If winter lightens up, next year looks to be outstanding to spite Old Man Winter. Check out the video and enjoy!

A very unique video with of an unfortunate goose. The purpose of the video is to remind people that actions have consequences and to think through hunting ethics.

First, if you are from PETA, please don’t yell…(and The Hunting Authority is probably not the site for you anyways!). The only reason I’m putting this goose video on the site is so others can learn from it. I’m sure the intent was not to injure the bird, but something as simple as using a broadhead would have made the outcome a phenomenal hunting success, instead of a sorry incedent.

Some final words on the footage….it was taken by a farmer who spotted the goose while bailing hay and was no way tied to the action. The goose was able to fly and forage. It was even seen swimming. The Hunting Authority is not condoning this behavior. We had several conversations about posting it… but there’s no reason not to learn from the aftermath of someone elses choice. This is a solid, real life reminder on hunting ethics and the consequences of a poor decision.

ND Pheasant hunting is still as good as it gets. A quick update on the 2009 upland season complete with video.

After a long wait, I finally had an opportunity to head out west for my 2009 pheasant hunt. I’ve heard all kinds of talk this year about upland populations being down considerably. After hunting southwestern ND for over 20 years I can definitely confirm that mother nature had it’s toll last winter and spring. Now let’s put it in perspective…with CRP programs, habitat development, and great management, pheasant populations in ND have exploded in the past 10 to 15 years making it one of the destination locations for hunters. The state had the honor of boasting perennial record bird numbers . Pheasant populations being “down” meant that we saw a few flocks of hundreds of birds per day instead of flocks that shade the sun hourly. We still saw 200 plus birds per day and had plenty of shooting opportunities. In almost any other state or region, numbers like this would be considered exceptional.

We had a phenomenal trip with limits of pheasants daily. This was a special trip to me personally since it was two days of hunting with my brother and sister. It’s one of the best things about the hunting experience…sharing it with the people you care about.

With the hen population I’d expect a fast recovery right back to new record years within a very, very short period of time. I’ll shut up and let the video speak for me a bit, there’s a couple photos blended in from last year as well. I don’t pretend to be production artist and wish I could have a few of the recording opportunities back, but I hope you enjoy the footage, especially after the first few clips that are bit shaky!
