This is a quick shooting demo testing the Rage 2 Blade Broadhead that I’m making the switch to this fall for my archery hunts. I really wanted to document the consistency of going from regular field points on my Beman ICS arrows…to the practice head that comes included with the Rage broadheads….and finally sacrificing a real broadhead to see if they fly as advertised.

The results speak for themselves. In the past, I always have to adjust to account for some drop. I made exactly zero adjustments from my field points, and can’t wait to put the hurt on a black bear next week. Check out the video. Keep in mind that I’m aiming above the circle. The center of my Block is shot to hell, but I wanted to get this done. The video also shows, once again, the reason why I insist on Lumenok…even when practicing.

I won’t go into a total political rant on the proposed lead ammo ban sought by a petition submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by five conservation groups this week, but this is and will be the new tactic….they can’t pass enough laws, so the anti-gun and anti-hunting crowd will move to ‘regulate’ what they want. Think about it, what’s the real difference between regulations and rules passed by government agencies like the EPA and actual laws? Wouldn’t a lead ammo ban handed down as a new regulation passed by the EPA have the same effect as if it was passed by the US House and Senate and signed by the President? Are any of the following concerning when put in context of rulings that could effect gun owners by Federal Agencies? Rulings would:

Be enforceable in all 50 states!

Regulatory bodies like the EPA don’t have to answer to a constituency of voters at home.

Seem faceless compared to a legislative (state or federal) body.

Rules and regulations carry virtually the same weight as laws.

The issue normally receives much less media attention (and/or public scrutiny) compared to legislative efforts.

Natural cover is given due to the large, overly complicated bureaucracy.

This should be a VERY LOUD warning shot that should awaken all sportsman, shooters, and gun owners that…not only do we need to be aware of attempted legislation that threatens us, but we must now pay attention to the new threat of our rights or access to guns and ammo being regulated away. Can you imagine waking up and finding out the EPA, with the stroke of a pen banned all of the most common ammunition based on negligible, and some say fabricated facts?

I read the NRA’s statement, and I’m confident they will be in our corner. The National Shooting Sports Foundation is also making a case against the petition. I’m fairly conspiratorial when it comes to the motives of groups coming after ammunition (of course under the guise of a ‘moral cause’). In my mind it plays out like this:

Lead ammo ban increases the cost of shooting sports by 40%….(imagine the young person making the decision to spend an hour on the range at the cost of $100+), less young people get into hunting and shooting, NRA and other organizations membership drops due to an aging membership base, = less representation and a smaller voice, leads to more restrictions, bans, and….?

Here’s a couple more links to older articles on Lead Ammo Bans:

Groups Seek Ban on Lead Ammo

No Bullets, No Shooting

By the way, the EPA has 90 days to grant or deny the petition, so stay tuned!

Before I get threats and whining from the PETA crowd for trying to take out every cottontail I can, let me clarify that these little terrorists have been perpetually destroying almost every new tree I plant. In one case they took out over 300 newly planted white pines in one winter. Needless to say, I don’t feel bad. YTD I’ve put about 10 down.

In this case, you can see the close miss. Watch the whole video and you’ll see the cottontail actually react to the release of the shot. It probably would have been about two inches high anyways, but this rabbits reactions were quick enough to let him get away. I did find a tuft of hair, but still a miss! Check it out, the slow motion footage is pretty cool!!! Once again, big thanks to Lumenok, it looks like a lazer streaking through to the target and really multiplies the value of video.

This is a very pleasant news update and report on Minnesota’s Permit to Carry Law from Channel 4 (WCCO) News, seven years after a bitter legislative debate. I give Mindy Grieling (DFL), a leader in the opposition of permit to carry, credit for her statement and the admission that people who feared an increase in violence where wrong.

Minnesota’s carry legislation has been an overwhelming success by all standards, amplified unfortunately this weekend when a bouncer, while legally carrying, was attacked by a patron with a knife. The bouncer had to exercise his right, successfully defending himself and potentially several others.

Hats off to WCCO for running this one. The only disagreement I had was on Grieling insinuating that people who supported the bill where knuckle dragging vigilante’s who where also equally wrong on their thoughts on the bill. In her words “….and people who thought crime would end because people could help out with vigilantism where wrong too.” Representaitive Grieling, no one I’ve spoke with exercises the right to carry for their visions of vigilantism justice, we just don’t want to be in a forced position to be unnecessary victims.

Anyways, a fairly balanced and refreshing piece that’s definitely worth the two minutes to watch!

This serves as a great reminder that different laws and requirements regarding guns, gun storage, registration, etc… has unintended consequences that will likely only effect law abiding citizens. In this case, Gregg Revell was on a trip from Salt Lake to Allentown, PA. He fulfilled all of the requirements needed to declare and check a handgun in his luggage. He had a scheduled connection through Newark, NJ, but his flight was late causing him to miss his connection. Here’s an excerpt from the NRA-ILA article, Outrage of the Week:

Revell’s flight into Newark was delayed, causing him to miss his connecting flight to Allentown. He was able to book a seat on the next flight, but that course of action was changed by the airline. He then tried to take a bus, but his luggage didn’t make it to the bus on time. He retrieved his luggage, but missed the bus. With no more connections to Allentown until the following morning, Revell went (with his luggage, of course) directly to, and stayed the night at, the Airport Sheraton Hotel. By this time, Revell had been through a lot, but his real trouble was just beginning.

The next morning, Revell returned with his luggage directly to the airport. He checked his luggage and, as he was supposed to, told the agent that he had an unloaded firearm stored in a locked case in his luggage. It was at this point that Revell’s destination changed from Allentown to a Newark jail cell. He was arrested on the spot because New Jersey law requires a permit to possess a handgun (and also bans the hollow-point ammunition that Revell also had in a separate locked container in his luggage), and as soon as Revell’s luggage became “readily accessible” to him (in this case, when he took possession of his luggage to go to the hotel) he violated state law.

You’d think that this would have been cleared up in short order. REVELL SPENT FOUR DAYS IN JAIL, and even though he was released on bail and eventually cleared of charges…did not receive his property back for over three years!

The NRA-ILA article has more detail and obviously highlights why everyone needs to help promote membership.

Wow!

Here’s the basics. The US Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that struck down DC’s ban on handguns. The city (D.C) re-wrote very restrictive gun laws to conform with the SCOTUS 2008 ruling. Heller again sued, and Judge Urbina ruled Friday, March 26 to uphold the new laws Washington D.C. has passed. These laws would:

Require an extensive registration process of all handguns that would include a ballistics test, fingerprinting of the owner, and re-registration every three years.

A ban on all semi-automatic handguns

(this is my opinion) I believe a ban on any gun and all magazines with a capacity of 10 rounds or more (the old “assault weapons” language).

Legally registered handguns must be kept disassembled or unloaded with a trigger lock secured!!

The above is not an all inclusive list, but hits the high points. It seems from various readings that Urbina took into account much of the factually inaccurate information presented by the “Brady Campaign” and choose to ignore many of the facts referenced by the Supreme Court majority.

I still find it incredible that if we substituted the above criteria to our right to “Freedom of Speech”, people would become unhinged. Can you imagine if a city passed a law requiring anyone who wanted to express an opinion publicly or privately…would need to be 1) Fingerprinted 2) Only allowed to speak in limited forms 3) Could not have any prepared and researched responses without violating the law. I’m still waiting for someone to help me understand why our lawmakers feel they can pick and choose which of the Bill of Rights actually apply. Help?

I’ll post up the best articles I found (on both sides), but it is almost certain that this decision will be appealed. It goes without saying that this is one more reason to support the NRA, make some phone calls, donate, forward this article, etc…!
