Survival Awareness - Are you Aware?

Picture This

You are on a fly-in, day fishing trip “up north”. You and your son or daughter are catching fish, enjoying a great day on a lake by yourself. It’s spring, and those afternoon clouds start to change color, the wind comes up, you have an undersized motor on an oversized boat, and the waves are coming fast and hard. The pick-up location is well out of sight, in one of the many bays across too much open water…and you know it doesn’t matter because no plane will be flying today.

You may now be facing a real life survival situation:

·         Are you prepared?

·         How’s your confidence?

·         What if you aren’t picked up tomorrow?

·         Do you have what you need?

·         Do you have a plan?

As much time as I have spent putting myself in what could be called high risk situations, it’s only been recently that I’ve become much more conscience about survival awareness. I take a very common sense approach to this subject. I prefer getting prepared with a core set of highly portable items that could mean the difference of survival in a worst case scenario and at a minimum increased comfort during a tough situation.  As you look at this list, note that almost all of it will either be on your body (knife, watch, lighter) or can be stored in a very packable gallon strorage ziplock bag (with smaller ziplocks inside to seperate gear even further).

"...you can factually prevent many situations."

I am convinced that the first step of “survival” is simply becoming aware of what could be a threat. In other words, by becoming aware of potential dangers, you are more likely to avoid those potential risks. So…by being aware of survival threats, you can factually prevent many situations. An example of this is hypothermia. If you are in an environment where you could face this common physical and life ending threat, you may be able to prevent yourself from being exposed by recognizing the threat, adhering to a plan, and removing yourself from the situation before it becomes a problem.
