The Second Amendment
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
Perspective
The Second Amendment is 27 words with very clear and direct meaning. The purpose of this section of TheHuntingAuthority.com is to provide you with some great resources and suggestions so that you are properly "armed" with knowledge and a clear historical perspective of what the second amendment means.
I'd also recommend that you go to the Blog and Articles (2nd tab on the top of the Home Page) section of TheHuntingAuthority.com and look at articles of interest under the Legislation category on the right. There you can read about current events and pending threats on:
- Gun Ownership
- Limiting Ammunition
- Licensing and Registration Requirements
- Etc..
You can also provide feedback directly through the comment section after each of these articles.
Resources
The following are some great resources for your review. Some of them provide a current legislative perspective like The NRA and NRA-ILA, while others provide quotes and comments from our founding father's on the subject:
- NRA-ILA - this is a link to the legislative action arm of the NRA. I like the "News" and "Issues" tabs. You can quickly find out about current legislative challenges or chose a category of interest and find out the specifics of a wide range of threats that effect the gun owner, hunter, or sportsman.
- NRA - Link up with the National Rifle Association's home page to find out about member benefits, current news, or upcoming broadcasts of Cam & Company on Sirius satellite 144.
- What Really Happened - great link of Quotes from historical and current figures that you will enjoy. What a great way to learn about history! I plan on adding one of these a day to my profile page (HeavyD)!
- James Madison Research Library - This link allows you to chose from a list of our founding father's which will bring up their specific quotes regarding The Second Amendment. I love them all, but Samuel Adams get my vote for most direct.
- Guncite - Great facts and reference material. I particularly enjoy The Original Intent and Purpose section. Most of the information is presented in a form that introduces the specific argument, and then provides the facts and historical perspective.
Also remember to participate on our FORUM and join the conversation. There are some great quotes that relate to the 2nd Amendment under the "Around the Cooler" category, as well as an entire section devoted to Legislation and Gun Rights.
Take Action
The challenge to every sportsman is to stay on top of the current issues on both a local and federal level. The second amendment is under attack. Our founders clearly saw this issue as a crucial part of our enduring freedom and made it a transparent right. A right with no strings, no exceptions, no qualifications.
We have seen our politicians and the anti-gun lobby try and rewrite our history and the intent of the second amendment. The second amendment did not mention the use of guns for hunting only, as a matter of fact, they were clearly more concerned with threats to the sovereignty of our country from both internal and external sources. Yet, over the past few decades, the media and anti gun lobby has consistently positioned the right to bear arms with more and more purpose driven qualifiers. In other words, does a particular gun have a sporting purpose, or could a different gun accomplish the same or similar hunting results. This is not for our legislators to decide.
